Ethically sourced speciality coffees

A lot of buzzwords are thrown around in specialty coffee these days. Sustainability. Ethically sourced. Directly traded. More often than not, these are just marketing jargon, but at Terrone, we take our relationship with the people who grow our coffee very seriously.

Our work at origin

In January 2018, our Head Roaster travelled to Guatemala to visit a number of small coffee communities and cooperatives. 

One of them is the Cooperative Nueva Esperanza Del Bosque, which is located in the municipality of Santa Cruz Naranjo in the Santa Rosa department of Guatemala.

We were struck by the incredible care and dedication of the workers and owners, who are committed not only to producing some of the world’s best coffee, but also to creating a safe and healthy environment for the people who live in the surrounding area. They take so much pride in their work, and we wanted to reward that with a fair price.

The cooperative is comprised of dozens of small producers, all of whom grow their own microlots. They then come together to produce a single lot at the cooperative.

We tried a number of delicious coffees from the collective, but one that particularly stood out was their honey-processed lot.
We decided to buy the entire lot, on the spot, directly from the cooperative.

The honey process is an unique method for processing coffee – that’s the act of separating the coffee cherry from the bean. Normally, the cherry is removed with water or dried in the sun and mechanically removed. With honey processing, the cherry is removed but some of its inner mucilage remains on the beans while they are dried. This produces a sweet, sticky bean that can be identified in the finished cup!

Now, despite its benefits, the honey process is more work for farmers and it’s also extremely rare for Guatemalan coffees, which are typically washed.

By dealing directly with the farmers, we were able to cut out numerous middlemen and ensure that as much of the price you pay for a bag of Terrone makes it back to the people who picked it from the ground. 

But our relationship doesn’t end there. 

Thanks to our help and the support of various charitable organisations, the cooperative was able to fund the construction of a much-needed medical clinic, as well as the salaries of a doctor and a nurse. Now, up to 35 people a month can be assisted. 

Our relationship with El Bosque is just at the beginning and we can’t wait to continue working with these passionate farmers and families to bring some of the world’s best coffees to you.
